AVS Futebol and “Memo” Ochoa were thrashed by Sporting Lisbon

The Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa suffered its first defeat with AVS Futebol SAD, which this Sunday was thrashed in its visit to Sporting Lisbon (3-0), which maintains its perfect record after the first six games of the season in the Portuguese championship.

The experienced Aztec goalkeeper, who had made his debut last week in his team’s victory over Río Ave (1-0), was unable to cope with Sporting’s offensive power, which ended up prevailing thanks to goals scored by Norwegian Conrad Harder (m.15) and Swede Viktor Gyökeres (m.45+4 and m.70).

Despite the strength shown by the Lisbon team, which has yet to know defeat this season, Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa He managed to make several good saves which helped the newly promoted team’s defeat not to be much bigger.

The result of the match between Sporting Lisbon and AVS Futebol SAD corresponding to the sixth round of the Portuguese championship.

According to statistics portal Sofascore, the Mexican made a total of six saves during the match, two of which were significant. The first was against a shot by Gyökeres (m.19) and then after a shot by Ousmane Diomande (m.80) in which he demonstrated his reflexes.

The Mexican goalkeeper reached an agreement earlier this month for one season, with the option of one more, with AVS Futebol after almost two months of inactivity following the end of his contract with Italian club Salernitana, which was relegated for this campaign.

Beyond Sunday’s result, at 39 years old, “Memo” Ochoa is showing that he can still play at the highest level after the player himself revealed his plan to arrive in good condition for the 2026 World Cup to try to earn a spot on the Mexican National Team.

With this setback, which is the third for AVSE Futebol SAD in six games played, the Mexican goalkeeper’s team is in tenth place in the standings with a record of two wins and one draw for a total of seven points, the same as Gil Vicente, Casa Pía and Río Ave.

The next match for Ochoa and company will be on Friday with a visit to Estoril, another team that is fighting to get into the mid-table positions. A victory for the Mexican team, against a hypothetical direct rival in their main objective of the season, which is to secure survival, would be of great importance despite the early days in the calendar.
