Venezuelan Jhonder Cádiz scored the goal that gave León a 1-0 win over San Luis. Cádiz tied the top scorers of the 2024 Apertura tournament of the Liga MX with five goals.

With his goal in the ninth round of the championship, Cádiz equaled the goalscoring haul of Argentine Germán Berterame, from Monterrey, and Portuguese Paulinho, from Toluca, in first place in the Apertura scorers’ table.

The Lion got its first win of the tournamentled by Argentine coach Eduardo Berizzo, who suffered losses in his first two matches.

Leon climbs the standings after victory

The Leonese improved their record in the competition to one match won, four draws and four defeats to move up from second to last to fourteenth place in the standings with seven points; despite losing, San Luis, managed by the Spaniard Domènec Torrent, remained in sixth place, with 14 points.

San Luis was superior to León in the first half, but good aim was not there on their side in their two clearest shots. The Ivorian Franck Boli, in the 18th minute, and Javier Güémez, in the 21st, both shot, but both went over the crossbar.

Berizzo’s men tried to open the scoring from the first minutes of the second half, but Andrés Sánchez, San Luis’ goalkeeper, prevented them by stopping shots from Cádiz, in the 46th minute, and from Uruguayan Diego Hernández, in the 53rd minute.

The insistence of the Lion turned into a goal at 62, with a filtered pass from the midfield by Iván Moreno that Venezuelan Cádiz received in the area and after evading two markers, he crossed a shot to Sánchez to convert the 1-0.

The weekend matches will conclude this Sunday when Pumas UNAM will host Tijuana, Santos Laguna will host Toluca and Juárez FC will host Tigres UANL.
