Ohio grandmother admitted she shot her 6-month-old granddaughter on purpose

A 43-year-old Ohio woman has admitted to shooting her six-month-old granddaughter, who miraculously survived.

Mia Desiree Harris pleaded guilty to felonious assault for the incident that occurred on Dec. 9 of last year. Officers were called to a home in Liberty Township, a Cincinnati suburb located in Butler County, for a report of a baby who had been shot.

The girl’s mother called 911 and told dispatchers: “They shot my baby. They shot my baby.”The operator asked, “Did someone shoot your baby?” And she replied, “Yes… Sir, please save my baby.”

Once on scene, officers discovered the girl had been shot in the head and was in critical condition. The girl was taken to UC West Chester Hospital in West Chester Township for treatment.

According to a statement released by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Harris fled the scene before police arrived, but was located and arrested without incident a short time later.

The document adds that during the incident, Harris “He shot several family members before intentionally shooting the girl”She was charged with three counts of felonious assault.

A copy of the criminal complaint filed in Butler County Court says Harris also caused “serious physical harm” to another victim, whose name was not redacted, by “striking [a esa persona] in the face with a fist.”

“I’m sorry, I’m not sorry”

Detective Daniel Turner testified in court that after officers asked him why he shot his granddaughter, he replied: “That wasn’t my granddaughter. I’m sorry, I’m not sorry.”

She also claimed that “her family was trying to take all her money and then leave, and she was not going to let that happen,” Turner said.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said the shooting was not an accident but intentional, describing the case as “one of the most disgusting and vile criminal acts I have ever seen in my lifeshooting a six-month-old baby.”

Jones told local Fox affiliate WXIX: “What makes it even worse is that this is the baby’s grandmother. He went and shot him and doesn’t seem to have any remorse.“I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everyone who is dealing with this. The doctors, the rescue team people, the officers, everyone. This is the worst thing that can happen.”

Since the incident, the baby is recovering and is “doing much better than anyone expected,” prosecutors said, according to the Journal-News.

Harris will be sentenced on October 29 and faces 15 years in prison.
