A group of House Republicans torpedoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) federal budget proposal on Wednesday, dealing an embarrassing blow to the GOP leader and derailing his strategy to avoid a government shutdown at the end of the month.

Federal government funding runs out at the end of the monthThe House of Representatives voted 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans against, two Republicans present and three Democrats in favor.

In Congress, a “clean” extension of the budget is considered without the clauses of the SAVE Act which requires proof of citizenship to exercise the right to vote in elections It is the only viable option to avoid a closure.

But Donald Trump is increasing the pressure to trigger a government shutdown if Republicans fail to pass the citizenship-proof voting measure, which is widely considered a nonstarter in the Democratic-led Senate.

Johnson called off a vote on the government funding legislation last week after enough House Republicans came out against the spending plan, and put it back up for a vote on Wednesday. facing another failure to pass it.

The House speaker has been under pressure to take unnecessary action on election security with the SAVE Act, as Trump continues to sow doubts without proof on the integrity of the elections in the run-up to them.

“If Republicans won’t accept the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not accept a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape or form,” Trump said on Truth Social on the Wednesday before the vote.

Requiring new voters to show proof of citizenship has become One of the top election year priorities for Republicanswho continue to maintain that there are non-citizens who vote in the US, even though it is already illegal to do so and research has shown that That voting fraud is rare.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has predicted that Johnson’s effort was doomed to failure.

“All it will do is make it clear that we are headed down a dead end,” Schumer said. “Instead, we need to have a bipartisan plan.”

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of participating in an “effort to shut down the government.”

“That’s not hyperbole,” Jeffries said. “It’s history. Because in the DNA of MAGA extremist Republicans has consistently been an effort to make extreme bailout demands on the American people, and if those extreme bailout demands aren’t met, to shut down the government.”

Lawmakers from both parties and chambers have said publicly and privately that they believe the current fight over the government’s budget is awill end with a “clean” three-month continuing resolutionwhich would set the stage for another showdown after the November elections but before lawmakers take a holiday recess in December.
