In response to the increase in retail theft, many chains have implemented security systems to prevent these incidents in their stores, as is the case of Walmart, which recently announced its partnership with a specialized technology company to optimize its in-store operations.

Walmart continues to make great strides in terms of the security of its stores, surprising many of its customers who have also posted about the retailer’s new changes on social media.

The company decided to join forces with Digimarc and invest about $3 million annually to Incorporate codes that are “invisible to the human eye” into their self-checkout systems on product packagingthus speeding up scanning to improve the shopping experience and making theft more difficult.

In this regard, the technology company Digimarc stated that “it is no longer necessary to search for barcodes during the scanning process, which makes scanning easier for customers. Imaging cameras can also detect multiple products at the same time.”

Walmart, through a statement, detailed that due to retail thefts it faces significant losses estimated at more than $2 million annually. However, Walmart US CEO, John Furner said steps were being taken to stop such incidents.

Furner also noted that despite the massive layoffs of many employees due to the closure of thousands of locations, at least 150 stores are expected to be built over the next five years, “creating tens of thousands of jobs in support of these projects. Contraction has increased slightly this year,” Furner said.
