The bodies of nine people were recovered after a landslide buried the homes of several families in central Mexico on Saturday, September 14, the government reported on Monday (09/16/2024).
The disaster took place in the community of San Luis Ayucan, in the municipality of Jilotzingoin the central State of Mexico, neighboring the capital, the National Coordinator of Civil Protection (CNPC) said in a statement.
“So far, nine bodies have been recovered and three people have been rescued alive,” the agency added, adding that it has already concluded the rescue efforts.
On Saturday, The rescuers managed to save the three survivors with the help of dogs. trained for this purpose, while the other nine people had been trapped under the rubble.
A baby dies
A three-month-old girl was confirmed dead on the same day of the collapse, although Civil Protection did not specify on Monday whether the baby was included among the nine bodies recovered.
Federal and local authorities maintain support actions for 132 people who remain housed in four temporary shelters, while 584 members of the Armed Forces and other institutions are collaborating in disaster relief, the bulletin said.
Landslides are common in Mexico, especially during the rainy and hurricane season, which runs from May to November. The country is also periodically hit by other natural disasters such as earthquakes.
