Perry Farrellvocalist and leader of the rock group Jane’s Addiction, has generated controversy for physically assaulting guitarist Dave Navarroduring the band’s concert on Friday, September 13 at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston.

In videos that circulated on social media minutes after the show (which ended abruptly) you can see how Farrell, 65, approaches Navarro (57) and pushes him, then punches him in the chest. Immediately, the group’s technicians, along with the bassist Eric Averythey intervene and restrain the singer, who continues to be furious and moving around a lot.

Etty Lau Farrell, the artist’s wife, wrote a long message on Instagram, giving her version of the events: “There was clearly a lot of tension and animosity between the members… the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit…Perry’s frustration had been mounting. Night after night, He felt like the stage volume had been extremely loud and the band was drowning out his voice. Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when The audience in the front row began to complain, cursing Perry because the band was playing too loud. and they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost control.

“Perry was like a crazed beast for the next half hour; he didn’t finally calm down, but he broke down and cried and cried. Eric (Avery) either didn’t understand what de-escalation meant, or he took advantage of the situation, and he took some cheap shots at Perry.” So far, the vocalist and his representatives have not made any comment on the incident.

Consisting of Farrell, Navarro, Avery and the drummer Stephen Perkins, Jane’s Addiction is one of the most important bands of American alternative rock. Their albums Nothing’s Shocking (from 1988) and Ritual of the usual (from 1990) are considered classics of the genre (Perry is the creator of the annual Lollapalooza music festival). The group is back on stage after 14 years, and there are several dates left on their reunion tour; the last show is scheduled for October 16 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
