Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna made history at the 2024 Emmys. The actors – of Mexican origin – presented the award for ‘Best Limited Edition Series’ and spoke in Spanish.

“Good evening, welcome to the Emmys. Greetings to the Spanish speakers in this room, and to the more than 50 million Spanish speakers in this country.”

Luna said those words before the nominees for the category were announced. After that, there was a standing ovation from the audience and the same enthusiasm was expressed on social media.

In this category, the director Steven Zaillian took home the coveted award for his work on the series ‘Ripley’, which is available on Netflix.

The Emmy Awards were held this Sunday, September 15, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The awards recognize the best Hollywood productions of recent months.

Both Luna and García Bernal, along with Eiza González, will soon be on the Disney Plus screen with the series ‘La Máquina’.

Bernal insists on “speaking in Spanish”

Gael Garcia Bernal is one of the most prominent Latin artists and, in fact, this is not the first time that he has said at an awards ceremony that it is important to “speak in Spanish.”

“We have to speak a lot of Spanish, confront those who make things difficult for us”she mentioned in an interview during the red carpet of the 2017 Golden Globes.

Speaking in Spanish during the awards ceremony marked an important milestone. First, because it is a ceremony in which only English is spoken and second, because it is an example of the need for American content to reach other audiences: Latinos.

This statement was made clear by the figure that Luna detailed: “50 million Spanish speakers in this country”referring to the Latino population residing in the United States.

This year, the United States will face a presidential election. In the race are Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The Republican candidate has stated that if he wins the presidency – again – he will focus on migrants, a fact that worries the Latino community in the country.
