Vice President Kamala Harris showed greater control of her narrative in the presidential debate against former President Donald Trump, who remained on the defensive and engaged in a line of attacks and reproducing lies about immigration and reproductive health.

While upcoming national polls will show who won the debate, early polls show Vice President Harris won this first exchange of ideas.

CNN polled debate observers and found that 63% said Harris won, compared to 37% for Trump.

The broadcaster said that in a previous poll, voters questioned were split 50-50 on the chances of who could win.

The poll highlights two data points about how Democrats and Republicans view their own candidates: while 96% of Harris’ supporters said she won, 69% of Trump’s supporters said she won. A difference of 30 percentage points among their likely voters.

The Washington Post did another exercise, but in key states, such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, where those who were unsure of who to vote for leaned toward Harris.

Among those surveyed, 12 previously said they would “probably” vote for Harris versus six who said they would vote for Trump; three people said neither. Both had zero mentions of the position that anyone would “definitely” vote for them.

After the debate, five people said they would “definitely” vote for Harris. Trump failed to win anyone over.

Another 10 said they would “probably” vote for Harris; Trump lost four people in that opinion; Trump maintained all six opinions that they would “probably” vote for him.

Trump’s campaign has released polls from outlets that have openly supported the Republican, including Newsmax, where 93% said Trump won; The Insider Paper, which said Trump had 78% support; and Leading Report, which said Trump had 91% support.
