Walmart lays off more employees in September and the list grows

After at least 11 Walmart locations and 51 health care and virtual care centers closed earlier this year, The retail chain announced that closures will continue into 2024, along with staff relocations and mass layoffs.

The company has focused on addressing underperformance at some of its locations due to increased retail theft, the fall in sales due to high inflation and, as a consequence, pressure on consumer spendingin addition to the transition to online sales.

Upon closing several stores, Walmart spokesman Brian Little mentioned “we are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them in our San Diego and El Cajon stores,” he said while highlighting that “We look forward to continuing to serve you at any of our many area locations, on Walmart.com, and through delivery to your home or business.”.

According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification data from each state, Walmart has so far laid off about 141 associates in Colorado, 387 employees in Georgia and 1,049 in the round of cuts in Wisconsin, Maryland and Ohio.

Despite the closures, the largest retail chain in the United States, Walmart announced in a press release that it plans to build 150 stores over the next 5 years “creating tens of thousands of jobs in support of these projects.” Employees who decide to continue working for the company will also be relocated.
