In a recent interview in which the sports director of the Barcelona Football ClubDeco, who spoke to Barca One, talked about several topics and one that was quite talked about was that of Nico Williams, one that to this day continues to be talked about quite a bit by the media and especially by fans.

Deco was questioned about this and the sports director responded if The Blaugrana needed to sign another winger this summer. The argument that the former Barcelona player used ended up highlighting Dani Olmo, in the sense that his versatility, being an all-round player, was what made the team finally opt for his signing over Nico Williams.

In this way, Deco made it clear “We needed a high-level winger. We have Raphinha, Ferran, the return of Ansu “He was doing very well in pre-season, but he had a foot injury. We have Lamine… We have players who can play on the wing like Fermin or Dani Olmo. We were clear that to bring in a player he had to be of a very high level. But in the end, signing Dani Olmo gave you more options.”

“It’s not that we haven’t spoken with clubs and players, But in the end we had priorities that were decisive in not leading to another extreme.”

Unexpected and painful injury

Another of the concerns that were asked to Deco in the interview was if Barcelona considered at the time to reinforce another area, another position, and he responded that yes it was considered, especially after Marc Bernal’s injury.. “We were not expecting Bernal’s injury last week, as he was a young player it was one of the toughest days.”I don’t like to see a player of this age suffering, although he will come back strong. But it was a tough day.”

“There we were able to try, but then we focused on what we had. “We had to find a player in the last three days, a player of quality who would fit in with fair play and that would always be very complicated. We focused on knowing that we have Frenkie, Gavi, Casadó, Eric who can play in that position and in the end we decided to stick with what we have.”

Regarding that specific situation, Deco spoke and stated that “the process for signing “First we talk to the coach about the number of players we have. When we lost Bernal we had Christensen and Araujo out, three players in the centre and pivot positions, but at the same time we have the recovery of Gavi and Frankie. But the timing of the injuries and the recoveries is not the same. There was a moment here when we started to think about what we could do. But the coach was the first to say that if we cannot bring our level it is better not to bring anything and we have what we have. We reflected a bit and did not make any hasty decisions.”
