Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday that candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump “treated Mexico with respect” during the US presidential debate.

“I was very pleased that Mrs. Kamala and former President Trump both treated Mexico with respect (in the debate)”, the president said during his morning press conference.

The Mexican leader said that with this demonstration at Tuesday’s event, “progress is being made” in respect for other peoples and “other sister governments.”

“And that they respect us as an independent, free and sovereign country.”, he pointed out.

López Obrador reacted in this way to the first debate that took place on Tuesday between the two current candidates for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021).

This despite the fact that on Tuesday night Trump said he will not allow Mexico to export Chinese cars to that country and again called migrants “criminals,” accusing them of eating dogs and cats in Springfield, Ohio.

Harris reiterated that she would sign a reform negotiated in February that would allow closing the border and expelling more migrants to Mexico.

López Obrador has defended Mexico’s foreign policy on several occasionswhich is based on non-intervention and mutual respect between countries, he said.

He has also insisted that Mexico should be treated as a free and sovereign country, and has defended not building a wall on the border with the United States, something that Trump has repeatedly proposed.

Polls predict a tight election in Novemberwith Harris leading Trump by just 2.7 percentage points in the national vote, according to polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight.
