Former Puerto Rican world champion José “Cagüitas” de Jesús arrested

The former Puerto Rican boxer “Cagüitas” of Jesusa former world minimum weight champion, was arrested and imprisoned this Sunday being accused of hitting his partner with his fist in the mouth in events that occurred in Guayama, a city in the southeast of Puerto Rico.

According to a report from the local police to which the EFE agency had access, De Jesús, 61, allegedly hit his partner in a “case of gender-based violence”.

The woman was transported by relatives to an area hospital.where she was treated by the doctor on duty and was discharged in stable condition.

From Jesus, For his part, he was treated in another nearby hospital, where He received stitches in the knuckle area.

The case was investigated by agent Edmi Malave, assigned to the Gender Violence Division of the Guayama area, together with prosecutor Dayanna Rosario Cintrón.

The prosecutor filed a charge against De Jesús in the Guayama Court for aggravated abuse under Law 54.

The evidence was presented to the judge Angel Rodriguez Torres, from the Guayama Court, who determined cause for arrest against De Jesus, and He was given bail of $50,000 dollars, which he did not pay and was admitted to the Ponce Correctional Complex.

The preliminary hearing was scheduled for September 17, 2024.

From Jesus he becamen World Boxing Organization minimum weight championor May 19, 1989 by defeating Mexican Fernando Martínez by technical decision on the billboard held at El San Juan Hotel & Casino.

The Puerto Rican boxer successfully defended the title in three consecutive fights until he was stripped of it in March 1992.

De Jesus retired from boxing in 1999 with a record of 31-9-1 (22 knockouts).
