US elections are held every four years, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The next US election will therefore be on November 5, 2024.

Once the election campaign is over, voting day arrives on November 5 for control of the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives and state offices.

All voters must be registered on the electoral roll. The minimum age for voting varies from state to state, but is generally set at 18 years.

What are the election events that are yet to take place?

  • Presidential debate on ABC on September 10. ABC will host a debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • Non-presidential primaries on September 10. States holding elections include Delaware, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
  • New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District Special General Election, September 18.

October

  • CBS Vice Presidential Debate, Oct. 1. Vice presidential candidates Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz will participate in a debate hosted by CBS.

November

December

  • Georgia runoff election on December 3. Held if no candidate in a race receives a majority of the vote on Election Day.
  • Louisiana’s runoff election is Dec. 7. There are no partisan primaries in Louisiana, but all candidates run on the same ballot on Nov. 5. The candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote wins the election. If no one wins, the two candidates with the most votes advance to the runoff.
  • The Electoral College vote is what officially determines the winner of the presidential election. This takes place in mid-December.
