Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured this Sunday in his latest official Government Report that Mexico now lives in “an authentic democracy” and has reversed “the decline” of the “neoliberal” period of the previous three decades.

“Now, fortunately, we are living in a true democracy, building a new, exalted, fraternal homeland”, declared the president at the beginning of his speech in the Zócalo of Mexico City, before hundreds of thousands of supporters.

López Obrador delivered his last official Government Report on Sunday, in which he reviewed his six-year term (2018-2024) before handing over the presidential sash on October 1 to his successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, from his same party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

“Today I present to you and to the people and the nation my final Government Report, And I do so more convinced than ever that the best thing about Mexico is its people.heir to civilizations that flourished long before the arrival of the European invaders,” he said.

The president said that, thanks to the values inherited by indigenous civilizations, he was able to “relatively quickly lay the foundations to begin a new stage, which is already known and identified as the Fourth Transformation of public life in Mexico.”

“We are heirs to a great past and an exceptional and profound history.”This largely explains why it did not take us long to reverse the decline that occurred with neoliberal policy,” he argued.

The Mexican ruler cited heroes of history such as Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos, Benito Juarez, Francisco I. Madero and Lazaro Cardenas.

With his ideals, he stressed, He presented 20 reforms to the Constitution on February 5 to “restore the revolutionary meaning to the Magna Carta” and counteract 36 years of the “disastrous neoliberal period,” in which there were laws for “the plundering and handing over of the nation’s assets.”

“With this ideology, we began our government almost six years ago. The first thing we did was reform the Constitution, as far as possible, and promote laws to stop the anti-popular, subservient and corrupt policy that had been imposed and legalized by the predominance of an oligarchic power,” he said.
