Mexican cartel's explosives factory discovered in Michoacán

Authorities in the state of Michoacán discovered a clandestine explosives factory that was operated by the Viagra Cartela criminal organization that emerged from the defunct civilian self-defense groups.

A source from the Michoacán Public Security Secretariat informed EFE that the explosives factory was discovered on a farm that It pretended to be a humble homein the town called Eréndira, in the municipality of Buenavista Tomatlán, a stronghold of Los Viagras and located in the Tierra Caliente region.

The property was located through an air and land operation deployed by agents of the Civil Guard (State Police), in response to a series of recent clashes between hitmen from at least four drug cartels fighting over the Tierra Caliente region.

At the scene, authorities They found dozens of homemade explosivesto be activated by drones or by means of mortars handcrafted by the hitmen.

Police officers also discovered that among the explosives there are devices similar to landmines and others similar to fragmentation grenades.

Explosive precursors such as gunpowder and other substances were also seized at the factory, as well as PVC pipes and equipment for welding or gluing the body of explosive devices.

The devices were transferred to a military camp, where they will be analyzed by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for deactivation or controlled explosion.

The Viagras is a drug trafficking cartel that emerged as a split from the self-defense groups that in February 2013 took up arms against The Knights Templar.

Through social networks, Los Viagras recently spread their criminal alliance with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), to fight tooth and nail for control of illicit activities in Tierra Caliente, against the Knights Templar and the Tepalcatepec Cartelwhich also maintain a criminal union.
