The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced a pause in its relations with the embassies of the United States and Canada due to warnings from diplomats from these countries about the risks of the reform to elect the judicial power by popular vote in Mexico.

“As long as they continue with that policy, then there is a pause with the embassy,” Manuel López Obrador.

Last Thursday, the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, warned that the judicial reform proposed by the López Obrador government puts democracy in the country and trade relations with the United States at risk, in addition to warning that the popular election of judges would further facilitate the interference of cartels in Mexican justice.

Clark reported that investors were concerned about the reform, which is expected to be approved in September when López Obrador’s alliance of parties has the necessary two-thirds majority in Congress to then be able to modify the constitution. López Obrador certainly did not take their opinion in the best light.

“We will allow the ambassador with all due respect, this is not a matter of a dispute between enemies, but how can we allow him to say that what we are doing is wrong,” Manuel López Obrador.

This is not the first time that López Obrador has paused a bilateral relationship, as in 2022 he announced a similar situation with Spain that in practical terms did not translate into any diplomatic action.
