J Balvin on Puerto Rican reggaeton artists: “I learned from betrayal”

J Balvin has not been immune to controversy within the reggaeton genre.

Throughout his career, he has faced conflicts with other artists, particularly with prominent figures such as Bad Bunny and Residente. With his album Ray In promotion, the singer continues to consolidate his place in urban music, while making it clear that he has learned valuable lessons from the betrayals he has experienced along the way.

Recently, during an interview with the international media outlet “Alofoke,” the Colombian shared his perspective on the controversies that have surrounded him, especially in relation to his Puerto Rican colleagues.

J Balvin took the opportunity to talk about the betrayal he has experienced within the industry. He acknowledged that, over time, he has learned to be more cautious with those with whom he decides to share his life and career.

“Was there a group of reggaeton artists from Puerto Rico who boycotted Balvin because he was representing reggaeton worldwide, being Colombian and not Puerto Rican?”asked the presenter of the program, Santiago Matís.

“What they have in their conscience is what is important”Balvin replied.

“They saw a kid from Medellin doing big business with Michael Jordan; doing business with other brands – now Ferrari – breaking records. You were at one point above Drake, the number one artist on Spotify”Matís added, highlighting Balvin’s achievements throughout his career.

“There are people who don’t like me”Balvin told him. “There are people who don’t like to see me win. But there are also people who like to see me win”he added to his reflection.

“During that moment I learned about betrayal. Those I thought were my friends were not my friends, but I am also grateful because I realize who I can count on and who I can’t,” he said, making it clear that these experiences have made him more selective and reserved. “There is a blacklist that we have” said Balvin, explaining that friends of his have remained present, who was part of Balvin’s sabotage during that time.

Bad Bunny’s hints

However, the topic did not end there. In the conversation, J Balvin was questioned about a phrase from Bad Bunny’s album, Nobody knows what will happen tomorrowwhere the Puerto Rican makes a dig at the Colombian, mentioning that “he always hangs out with the same people,” while others, like Balvin, “are friends with everyone.”.

In response, Balvin maintained a diplomatic tone, stating: “They say that if you are a friend to everyone, you are a friend to no one, but I am a very good friend and I have no regrets (…) I know what I am and I know what I do”These words reflect a firm stance from the artist, who has decided not to let himself be affected by other people’s comments.

What was left of Residente’s tirade

In addition, Balvin referred to the famous Residente tirade, where he was the target of harsh criticism.

Despite what happened, the Colombian chose not to fuel the resentment and instead focus on forgiveness: “Life is much more complicated than not forgiving a situation like that. He shouldn’t be expecting forgiveness either. In the end, resentment is a poison that one takes on oneself. I prefer to forgive myself.”expressed the artist, showing a maturity that he has acquired over the years.

Throughout his career, J Balvin has proven to be a resilient artist, capable of facing criticism and learning from it. His message not only reflects his personal growth, but also his desire to continue advancing in his career without carrying resentments from the past.
