Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a military state of emergency on Sunday after launching airstrikes in Lebanonto thwart an imminent large-scale attack by the Shiite group Hezbollah, which in turn announced the massive launch of rockets and drones.

President Joe Biden immediately reaffirmed his support for Israel and called for regional stability following the escalation of cross-attacks by the Israeli state army and Hezbollah.

Biden, on a family trip to California, is closely following developments in Israel and Lebanon and has ordered senior officials to be in continuous communication with their Israeli counterparts, National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said. Meanwhile, theDefense Secretary Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to defending Israel against any attack from Iran, its partners and/or regional representatives, the spokesperson reiterated.

Hezbollah on Sunday began its retaliation for the assassination of its top commander Fuad Shukr, launching hundreds of rockets and drones against northern Israel, after almost a month of waiting and with both countries plunged into fear of an open war, Lebanese information declared the operation concluded for today and said that it had been the first phase of response to Shukr’s death when an Israeli bomber hit a building in the suburbs of Beirut on July 30.

Hezbollah’s response came after 72 particularly intense hours of attacks by Israel, which had earlier bombed several points in Lebanon in what it described as preemptive strikes.
