John Michael Luttig, retired federal appeals court judge and who for years supported the Republicans, now maintains that Donald Trump represents a threat to democracy.

Although his career received a major boost from Republican President George H.W. Bush after the attacks on the Capitol in January 2021, Luttig He disapproved of Donald Trump’s reluctance to refuse to recognize Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential elections and from that moment on he joined the ranks of his detractors.

In view of the elections, during a statement made to the television network CNN, The veteran judge indicated that he will support Kamala Harris.

“In the 2024 presidential election, there is only one political party and one presidential candidate who can claim the mantle of defender and protector of American democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.

As a result, I will vote without hesitation for the Democratic Party candidate for the presidency of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.“, he said.

Besides, The Texas judge said that the damage caused by Donald Trump almost four years ago when he tried to overturn the election results had undermined citizens’ confidence in the credibility of the elections.

“Due to the former president’s continued and deliberately false claims that he won the 2020 election, millions of Americans no longer have faith or confidence in our national elections, and many will never again.

Many Americans – especially young people, tragically – have even begun to question whether constitutional democracy is the best form of self-government for the United States,” he stressed.

However, Luttig urged citizens not to fail to cast their vote, as their apathy in avoiding their right to vote is even more damaging to the nation.

“It is time for all Americans to stand up and say whether they believe in American democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law, and whether they want the same for America, or whether they do not,” he stressed.

In addition to the Texas judge, other Republicans who have publicly turned their backs on Donald Trump are Joe Walsh, Barbara Comstock and Adam Kinzinger.
