The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed this Wednesday that will send a letter to his American counterpart, Joe Bidento denounce interference by the United States Government in matters that “only pertain to the sovereignty of the country.”
“I am going to send a letter to the President of the United States, to President Biden on this issue (interference), and also to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. will make a diplomatic note on the same subject because we believe that there is open interference by the United States Government in matters that only correspond to the sovereignty of our country,” said the president.
The Mexican ruler pointed this out in his daily press conference just minutes after Pablo Gómez, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), revealed the money that the civil organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) supposedly receives from the United States.
According to the report by the UIF, the non-profit organization, which has denounced corruption scandals of the current Government that include officials and children of López Obrador, obtains resources both nationally and internationally through voluntary contributions and tax-deductible donations for the donor.
According to Gomez, MCCI’s income began to be recorded in 2016, and by 2023 it totaled a little over 502.58 million pesos (26.7 million dollars); while from 2017 to 2023 it received just over 13 million pesos (690,000 dollars) from accounts originating in the United States.
In light of this, López Obrador also said that he will ask the tax attorney, Grisel Galeano, to conduct a review together with the Tax Administration System (SAT) to Check if the donations received by MCCI comply with the laws.
“We still have time to make some changes, present legislative initiatives so that it is not with resources from the same people that campaigns are carried out against the interests of the majority of Mexicans,” he said.
He also said that when taxes are deducted from donations, the income does not reach the Treasury and “cannot be used for the development of the country.”
In 2023, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) of the Government of the North American country admitted financing of more than 6 million dollars to MCCI, an organization founded by businessman Claudio X. González, an open opponent of the Government of López Obrador.
