For the lawyer, “the unjust harassment suffered by the boxing champion will go down as the biggest stain of these Olympic Games.”

A gold filled with tears of joy and frustration and injustice

Boxer Imane Khelif became the winner of the medal Gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning the final of the -66 kilogram welterweight division at Roland Garros. After competing in the Tokyo 2020 Games without making much or any noise, Khelif found herself embroiled in many controversies and debates in Paris over her gender, led by conservative circles, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Boxing Federation (IBA) at odds over the issue.

Imane Khelif’s controversies in her boxing career

The controversy regarding the boxer dates back to last year, when Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting, also in the spotlight for the same issue explained above, had been disqualified from the women’s World Championship.

The story of when it all began

According to information from FIBA, Imane Khelif was not able to pass a test to determine her gender. The Federation has not been able to specify what type of test she had undergone, while the IOC has maintained at the time that the Algerian can participate in the Olympic Games in the women’s category.

The controversy was back on the public table at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when her first-round opponent, Italy’s Angela Carini, made the decision to abandon the fight in the first minute of the first round. On social media, the boxer was the victim of a hate and misinformation campaign, which portrayed her as “a man who fights women.”

“I am a strong woman with special powers. From the ring, “I sent a message to those who were against me,” Imane Khelif told reporters on Friday after winning gold.

“I am fully eligible to participate, I am a woman like any other.”I was born a woman, I have lived as a woman and I have competed as a woman,” the boxer insisted.
