Cause of death revealed for woman found on baggage carousel at Chicago airport

Authorities reported that The death of a woman found inside the baggage claim area of ​​a Chicago airport is being ruled a suicide.

The 57-year-old woman, identified as Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina, was found trapped inside the baggage carousel machinery at O’Hare International Airport on Thursday.

The medical examiner’s office determined that The cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging and it was declared a suicide.according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The woman entered the restricted area shortly before 2:30 a.m. wearing flip-flops. She was found entangled in the conveyor belt system used to move luggage.according to the fire department.

Security footage only captured her walking toward the area but did not show how she died, The Associated Press reported.

“He was trying to gain access through several points. They’re not sure what his motive was. He was trying to get to the secure area of ​​the airport,” a source told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The woman was allegedly in an area of ​​Terminal 5 that is off-limits to the public, but her presence there would not be considered a security breach because it did not take place in a high-security area.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation was launched which is still ongoing.

Scott Allen, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor, said an official from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration visited the site and learned that The woman was not an airport employee.
