Mexican diver Randal Willars was very close to getting on the podium in the 10-meter platform this Saturday in the penultimate day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games but an unfortunate performance in his last jump prevented him from doing so.
Willars eventually finished in fifth place in the final held at the Paris Aquatic Centre located in Saint Denis with a score of 478.40, while the other Mexican in the competition, Kevin Berlin, finished in ninth place with a total of 420.65 points.
For Randal Willars, things were going well in his first jumps, and he was in contention for the silver medal during the first five rounds. However, at the decisive moment, a slip prevented the Mexican from getting into the medals.
Finally, the podium in the 10-metre platform at Paris 2024 was occupied by the Chinese Yuan Cao, who completed his performance with a score of 547.50. He was followed by the Japanese Rikuto Tamai (silver) after finishing with a score of 507.65 and the bronze went to the British Noah Williams (497.35).
Mexico’s medal haul in diving at Paris 2024 thus remains at two medals thanks to those won by Osmar Olvera in the three-meter springboard (silver) and the three-meter synchronized springboard with Juan Celaya (bronze).
Overall, the Aztec delegation has five medals in these Olympic Games, with those won by boxer Marco Verde (silver), judoka Iwita Alcaraz (silver) and the women’s archery team made up of Alejandra Valencia, Ana Paula Vázquez and Ángela Ruiz (bronze).
What happened on Randal Willars’ last jump?
After a strong performance in his first jumps, Mexican Randal Willars saw his chances of winning a medal in the 10-metre platform final at Paris 2024 evaporate after a final jump in which he was not up to the level of his previous performance.
According to ESPN, Willars performed the most difficult dive of the competition with four and a half forward somersaults, a dive with a difficulty of 4.1 degrees. However, she failed in her execution and ended up achieving a score of 61.50.
By that point in the competition, the Mexican had an eight-point lead over Japanese Rikuto Tamai, who ended up taking the silver medal, thus leaving Randal Willars with no options and having to settle for an Olympic diploma.
