The civil defense agency of Gaza, a territory governed by the Hamas group, considered a terrorist organization by several countries, said on Saturday that the death toll from an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza City was between 90 and 100.

“The death toll is now between 90 and 100 and there are dozens more injured. Three Israeli rockets hit the school hosting displaced Palestinians,” the organisation’s spokesman, Mahmoud Basal, told AFP.

The Gaza government’s communications agency said that “more than 100 martyrs” died in the attack.

According to the Israeli army, the school housed a command centre for the Islamist group Hamas.

Basal described the incident as a “horrific massacre.” “Teams are trying to control the fire to remove the bodies of the martyrs and save the wounded,” he said.

The Israeli military said Saturday it had “precisely struck Hamas terrorists operating in a command and control center embedded in the Al Taba’een school.”

Attack on two more schools

On Thursday, August 8, the civil defense agency of the Hamas-ruled territory said that Israeli strikes against two schools in the same town had killed more than 18 people.

The Israeli army then also claimed that it had attacked two Hamas command centres.

The war in Gaza began on October 7 with a Hamas attack on southern Israel that left 1,198 people dead, most of them civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data.

Islamist fighters have also taken 251 hostages. The Israeli military estimates that 111 remain in Gaza, including 39 who are dead.

In response to that attack, Israel launched a military campaign against Hamas in Gaza that has killed at least 39,699 people, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.
