The cancer symptoms Don Omar experienced before diagnosis

The news that Don Omar had cancer shocked his fans and the world of music and entertainment.

It was a big surprise for everyone when El Don uploaded a photo to his Instagram account, informing his followers about his illness and later announcing that he had recovered. In an interview with Lili Estefan for “El Gordo y la Flaca,” the singer of “Salió el sol” told in detail everything about his kidney cancer and explained to Estefan what symptoms led him to be examined by the doctor who diagnosed him.

William Omar Landrón Rivera, known to the world as Don Omar described receiving that news as “one of the most unexpected surprises”.

“Everything was going well. We had just finished doing all those shows – 20 shows in the United States, all sold out, and almost three shows before finishing I started to feel bad,” said the artist, who felt that he was doing everything right in terms of his health up until that point.

“I consider myself a young man. I am 46 years old. I started my weight loss plan, I had already lost weight. And I was surprised that something was really wrong inside my body.”he said. “Those were the things I was battling in my head; I was saying, ‘everything is fine. It can’t be possible that within so many good things, something is going wrong with my body,’” added El Don, who began to describe his major symptoms.

“I started to see that there were changes inside my body. I started to feel weak, and at that moment I was feeling that weakness, [sin saberlo aún]was [sufriendo de] a blood hemorrhage, which was being reflected in my urine for two weeks. And being scared, stubborn and trying not to be mean – although now I see it as an act, a little selfish – I remained silent,” said the singer, who remembers having related the symptoms to possible dehydration.

“I diagnosed myself. I said to myself, ‘I must be dehydrated.’ I started drinking water with lemon. I started self-medicating and everything really got worse after my show here in Miami,” added the artist, who noted that On April 21, during the Miami concert, he was already feeling unwell, but on May 2, during a Formula 1 event, things took a turn for the worse.

“I remember that the temperature that day was almost 104 degrees. I had just finished doing a show the night before at the Hard Rock Arena and the next day I had to do a 30-minute performance, which was extremely short. I feel like the temperature is still affecting me a lot and I’m getting weaker, I keep drinking water and I keep feeling dehydrated. When I leave the presentation I go back to the hotel and when I go back to the hotel and go to the bathroom everything got worse. It wasn’t just color in the urine anymore. It was completely blood.El Don recounted.

The artist says that it was then that he made the decision to contact his doctors.

“I was really scared. I called the doctor. I told him what was happening to me. My doctor was really scared. When this happens, I call.” Everyone is on alert now, because the diagnosis and what I shared with my doctors, they all understood that my case was much more than I wanted to explain. I arrived in Orlando and they gave me the diagnosis.”said Don Omar, who described the treatment at the Orlando Health Center, where he was treated, as optimal and that “they acted as quickly as they could.”

“My diagnosis, when they did one of my studies, reflected that they had found a renal cell carcinoma in my left kidney… a tumor the size of almost two millimeters.”the artist said.
