Ahead of the upcoming inauguration ceremony, the Mexican government has once again sparked controversy by inviting the Russian presidentVladimir Putin at the inauguration ceremony of the new president Claudia Sheinbaum.
The Russian Embassy in Mexico City officially confirmed that the Kremlin has received an invitation to Sheinbaum’s inauguration ceremony.
“Russia’s invitation to participate in President Sheinbaum’s inauguration was sent to President Putin. The Russian president will decide whether he will take part in the ceremony himself or appoint another high-ranking official to do so on his behalf,” the diplomat said.
According to Claudia Sheinbaum’s own team, coordinated by Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the next Secretary of Foreign Affairs, invitations have been sent for weeks to the presidents of various countries to attend as special guests the inauguration on October 1 of the winner of the last presidential elections on June 2.
One of the formal invitations was addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and was sent to him through the Mexican embassy in Russia.
Notably This is not the first time that Mexico has generated controversy around the Kremlin, just last SeptemberThe participation of Russian soldiers in a military parade to commemorate the beginning of the struggle for independence has sparked criticism of the country’s stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
For this reason, although López Obrador has repeatedly defended Mexico’s neutrality in the face of the war in Ukraine, some have accused the president of having a preference for Russia.
Given the precedent, Claudia Sheinbaum’s invitation is once again generating controversy, even though the possibility of the Russian leader traveling to Mexico is remote, since the country is subject to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which ordered Putin’s arrest for war crimes in Ukraine, so the leader would send someone to represent him.
At the same time, in recent days, Sheinbaum reported that Peru and Ecuador will not be invited to her inaugurationcontinuing with the policies implemented by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which restrict relations between Mexico and both countries.
