The Brazilian team was in charge of putting a stop to the powerful Spain in the semifinals of the women’s soccer of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where the Brazilians will be facing the United States in the fight to win their first gold medal in this discipline.
In a rematch of their 2-0 defeat at the hands of the reigning world champions in the group stage finale a week ago, the Canarinha proved their power on Tuesday in Marseille to claim a clear 4-2 victory that gave them passage to the decisive stage.
Despite not being able to count on their captain Marta, who served her second game of suspension for her expulsion in the match against the Spanish, Brazil gave a convincing demonstration against La Roja, who had one of their worst performances in recent years.
An own goal by Irene Paredes just six minutes into the game opened the scoring for the Brazilians, who then completed their ticket to the Olympic final through Gabi Portilho (45+4), Adriana (m.77) and Kerolin (m.90).
For her part, Salma with a double (m.85 and m.90+13) was in charge of discounting for Spain, which had its great stars among which stand out Athenea del Castillo, Aitana Bonmatí, Jenni Hermoso and Alexis Putellas but they could not reverse the result against the Brazilians.
The team led by Montse Tomé will now have to settle for playing the bronze medal match, in which they will face Germany, which had been defeated by the United States (1-0) in extra time earlier on Tuesday.
The third time lucky?
The Brazilian national team still does not have an Olympic gold medal in women’s football. Since this sport was included in the Olympic calendar in Atlanta 1996, the South Americans have had the opportunity to compete in two finals, both of which ended in defeat.
On both occasions, one thing can be seen in common: they both lost to the United States, first in Athens 2004 (2-1) and then in Beijing 2008 (1-0). And it is precisely in the final in Paris 2024 that both teams will face each other again.
Will it be the third time lucky for Brazil and for Marta? The tireless Brazilian captain experienced those two painful defeats that were camouflaged with the silver medals and now she will have a third chance to climb to the top of the podium in the twilight of her successful football career.
