Two-year-old Michigan boy shot himself in the stomach

Authorities reported that A two-year-old boy shot himself in the stomach in a suburb of Detroit, Michiganwhile in the care of a nanny, who allegedly had unsecured weapons in her home.

Warren police said Saturday that officers were dispatched to the home around 6 p.m. to treat the injured child, who He was taken to a hospital where he is in stable condition.

According to authorities, the boy was in the care of a 42-year-old babysitter who had two handguns. Warren police said in a statement that The woman was believed to have left the guns unsecured in an area accessible to the boy.

“Investigators will examine details regarding the safe storage of the handgun as part of their investigation. At this point in the investigation, it does not appear that a more serious crime was involved,” police said in the statement, as cited by The Associated Press.

A state law went into effect earlier this year requiring gun owners with a minor in the home to store firearms in locked storage containers.

Police in Warren, which is about 20 miles (32 km) from Detroit, said more details would be released at a news conference on Monday.
