Football has brought many joys to Mexico at the Olympic Games. However, for the edition of Paris 2024Aztec football will not show its potential. Find out why El Tri did not qualify for the Olympics.
Mexico’s recent successes at the Olympic Games are a thing of the past. In 2012 they took the gold medal after beating Brazil in the final of the tournament and in 2020 they settled for the bronze medal. Javier Aguirre and Jaime Lozano were the strategists of these teams, respectively.
Mexico failed to secure a spot in Paris 2024
In the men’s category, the Mexican team will not be able to compete for a medal more representative than the bronze. This was confirmed after El Tri had a poor performance in the 2022 Concacaf Pre-Olympic Tournament.
The Aztec team beat the national teams of Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago in the first phase of the tournament. Puerto Rico was the next obstacle in the way, But then Guatemala would defeat the Aztec team in the quarterfinals.
This result left Mexico without any chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games and also took away their chances the possibility of playing in the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
In the women’s branch the result was much worse. The Aztec team was the organizer of the tournament of which They left empty-handed. Mexico was defeated in its matches against Jamaica, Haiti and the United States.
It is worth mentioning that El Tri was the home team in this tournament. But the public support was not enough for the women’s team to achieve victory. their place at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Mexico’s absence serves as a lesson and a reflection for the future. These lower teams are the foundation of the senior team, in both cases. Staying in the competition will be important and now they will have to wait for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to be able to claim their place.
