Mesa Mayor John Giles says he’s tired of waiting for change within the Republican Party and, since Donald Trump is their candidate for president, they anticipate that, in opposition, they will support the Democrat Kamala Harris with their vote.
In an opinion piece published in The Arizona Republic, The Republican lawyer encouraged citizens to vote against the New York billionaire.
“Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, regardless of background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity and security to live their American dream.
However, Since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to correct course.
“With Trump in power, we continue down the path of political extremism, far from focusing on our fundamental freedoms,” he said.
From the perspective of the 63-year-old mayor, the administration led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris fulfilled its campaign commitments in Arizona, such as promoting investments in infrastructure and job creation.
In contrast, Giles accused Donald Trump of having distanced himself from immigration reforms, which he never implemented.
Faced with this situation, announced that he supports the vice president of the nation to replace Joe Biden, as he sees it as an opportunity to restore “decency” in politics.
“That’s why I’m with her. Kamala Harris is the competent, fair, and equitable leader our country deserves. There is too much at stake this year to vote for a Republican at the top of the ticket,” he stressed.
Although Arizona is governed by Democrat Katie Hobbs, until a few months ago, the results of most polls placed Donald Trump as the favorite to win the presidency, but once Joe Biden declined to participate in the elections, it seems that some citizens, like the mayor of Mesa, are considering the option of changing their vote, which would make the definition of a winner at the state level closer.
Regardless of the outcome, it is a hard blow for Republicans to learn that one of their mayors has become a detractor.
