Athletes who were to train at the Olympic facilities on the River Seine have been unable to do so for the second day in a row after the organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games announced its cancellation due to poor water quality.

Following a meeting with the meteorological service, Paris City Hall and the Prefecture of the Ile de France region, both the Paris 2024 Organising Committee and the International Triathlon Federation have decided to cancel the second day of training at the Olympic venues on the River Seine.

“They do not offer sufficient guarantees”both parties concluded regarding the river waters after having carried out several analyses on Sunday. “The priority is the health of the athletes”added the statement released by the Organizing Committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

It should be remembered that the French authorities allocated more than $1.5 billion to improve the water quality of the Seine, known for its high levels of pollution, in an ambitious plan to make the famous river part of the venues for these Olympic Games.

According to meteorological services, no further rain is expected in the coming days, which would allow pollution levels to drop in the section of the river that runs through Paris. It is hoped that activities planned in those waters can be carried out.

“Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, it is expected that water quality will return to below the limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on July 30.”adds the statement issued by the Olympic authorities.

The decision to open the waters of the polluted Seine River for testing for Paris 2024 generated much controversy.

In addition to the men’s triathlon on the Seine, the women’s triathlon is also scheduled to take place the following day, as well as the men’s and women’s open water events on July 31 and August 5, respectively.

Several days before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last Friday, the mayor of the French capital, Anne Hidalgo, as well as the president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, Tony Estanguet, and other authorities bathed in the Seine River, something that had not happened for more than a century due to the conditions of the river.

The image was shown by the media to show that the well-known river had adequate sanitary conditions for the Olympic Games. However, according to several reports, it was learned that at that time, on July 17, the water did not meet the minimum sanitary conditions.
