The Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs reached an agreement on Sunday that includes Mexican third baseman Isaac Paredes, who will continue his career in the Major Leagues but now in the Windy City.

Isaac Paredes, 25, is coming off his first MLB All-Star Game appearance and has a total of 16 home runs and 55 RBIs this season before Sunday’s game in the Major Leagues.

In this surprise trade, the Cubs secured a hitter who has been tested in the Majors by the Mexican. Last season he stood out with 98 RBIs, but he is also a valuable piece in the infield.

The report from the MLB.com social media account confirmed the trade of Mexican Isaac Paredes from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Chicago Cubs.

In 2024, he has already played more than 100 games with the Tampa Bay team, which recently also said goodbye to the other Mexican in its ranks, the Cuban-born outfielder Randy Arozarena, who left this week for the Seattle Mariners.

The Chicago team is reinforced with an important piece also on a defensive level and that ensures consistency at third base. His incorporation comes in this second half of the season in which they are looking for a comeback after registering a record of 51-56, placing them in fourth place in the National League Central Division.

Isaac Paredes made his Major League debut in the 2020 season with the Detroit Tigers and after a couple of seasons he moved to the Tampa Bay Rays where he has spent the last two and a half seasons before now moving to the Chicago Cubs.

What do the Tampa Bay Rays get?

The departure of Mexican third baseman Isaac Paredes will allow the Tampa Bay Rays to have the opportunity to receive up to three players in this trade with the Chicago Cubs that was made official this Sunday in the Major Leagues.

The Rays welcomed Dominican third baseman Christopher Morel, who has 18 home runs and 51 RBIs with the Cubs this season. The Caribbean native has an offensive average of just .199.

Additionally, Tampa Bay will also welcome pitchers Hunter Bigge and Ty Johnson, two prospects who arrive to reinforce their pitching staff for the long term. With these two pitchers, the Rays have a total of five prospects before the MLB trade deadline on July 30.
