David Banda has been open about learning to fend for himself in New York City, after moving out of his mother Madonna’s luxury Upper East Side apartment.

In an Instagram Live, he shared how he has been looking for food when he gets hungry at night and realizes he doesn’t have enough money to buy it, sometimes resorting to scavenging. According to him, it’s an experience he finds eye-opening and part of his growing up process.

“It’s 9pm, I’m hungry and I realize I don’t have enough money to buy food and I’m looking for food in the trash”

“I love it. I’m not alone, I have my girlfriend Maria Atuesta,” he said about his partner. “But I love it.”

Why did Madonna’s son move?

It’s unclear when Banda moved out of Madonna’s home, but he was by her side during her serious health scare last year, which led to her being hospitalized in the ICU.

More than a week and a half after returning home, the Queen of Pop expressed gratitude for being alive after contracting a serious bacterial infection.

“My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my kids,” she shared on Instagram alongside a selfie in early July 2024.

Madonna rescheduled her world tour, which would later be marred by her final moments in the spotlight, to recuperate and was frequently seen with Banda at her side.

Ahead of her 65th birthday last August, the ‘Holiday’ singer was spotted alongside Banda at JFK Airport before heading off on vacation.

Banda showed his protective side as he guided his mother through the terminal before boarding.

Banda was adopted by Madonna in 2006 from the Home of Hope in Malawi. The pop star once said she felt a special connection to him when she learned he was suffering from pneumonia and malaria.

Like his adoptive mother, the young man has an affinity for music and once shared a video with Madonna dancing salsa.
