David Banda has been open about learning to fend for himself in New York City, after moving out of his mother Madonna’s luxury Upper East Side apartment.

In an Instagram Live, he shared how he has been looking for food when he gets hungry at night and realizes he doesn’t have enough money to buy it, sometimes resorting to scavenging. According to him, it’s an experience he finds eye-opening and part of his growing up process.

“It’s 9pm, being hungry and realizing I don’t have enough money to buy food and looking for food in the trash,” Banda said.
