Ohio police shot dead a man armed with knives near the Republican Convention

Columbus, Ohio, police officers shot and killed a man around 1:10 p.m. Tuesday near 14th and Vliet streets in Milwaukee, which is about 1 mile from Fiserv Forum, the main venue for the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Witnesses told WISN 12 News that two homeless men were fighting in King Park and one of them pulled out a knife. The men were shocked when so many officers responded.

Milwaukee Police Chief, Jeffrey Normanheld a press conference Tuesday night, where he detailed that 13 Columbus officers saw A man with a knife in each hand facing an unarmed person.

Norman said the officers identified themselves and told him to drop the knife. Instead, the man attacked the other individual, so the officers shot the attacker.

“Someone’s life was in immediate danger”Officers stepped up to the plate and saved someone’s life today,” the police chief said, revealing that five officers fired shots.

According to WISN 12 News, there was a large police presence at the scene, including the Secret Service. Beloit police were helping secure the park.

Later Tuesday night, Columbus Police Chief posted body camera video from one of the officers.

“In the interest of transparency, I am releasing body camera footage of the shooting. I have reached out to the Milwaukee Police Department to inform them of my decision to release this footage,” said Chief Elaine R. Bryant.

Reactions to the shooting

As reported by The Independent, The shooting sparked anger among residentswho wondered why there were out-of-state police in their neighborhood, located a mile from the convention site.

Relatives of the deceased identified the deceased as Samuel Sharpe43. “They came into our community and shot and killed our family right here in a public park,” said Linda Sharpe, the shot man’s cousin, adding that her relative lived in an encampment across the street from where the shooting occurred.

It should be noted that Thousands of police officers from multiple jurisdictions are in Milwaukee to provide additional security for the convention.which began on Monday and runs until Thursday.

However, residents said the encampment had been in the neighborhood for a while and Milwaukee police officers are familiar with many of those living in the tents, so they may have been able to calm the situation.
