26 dead after bus crash into cliff in Peru

At least 26 people died and 14 were injured when a bus fell into a cliff in southern Peru, police reported on Tuesday (16.07.2024).

The vehicle, with more than 40 occupants, was on the Vía Los Libertadores and was heading from Lima towards the Andean region of Ayacucho, when it rolled into a precipice of about 200 meters.

“We have (…) in a final balance 26 people died and 14 were injured in the accident“said Colonel Jhonny Valderrama, head of the police’s Highway Protection Division.

Police and fire brigades are working to recover the bodies.

The accident occurred in the early morningand for the moment the authorities have not revealed the probable causes of the accident.

Between 2021 and 2023, there was an annual average of 3,000 deaths on Peruvian roads, according to the National Road Safety Observatory of the Ministry of Transport (ONSV), which links the high accident rate to three main causes: reckless driving, speeding and drunkenness.
