In April 2023, agents of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), in collaboration with the Mexican Navy, arrested Rodrigo Omar Páez Quintero, nephew of drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero, and this Sunday, after a stumbling process, his transfer to the United States was confirmed.
The above after the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) of Mexico confirmed the extradition to the United States of Rodrigo Páez Quintero, lieutenant of drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero in Sonora, leader of the Caborca Cartel or “La Plaza” who is held responsible for the violence in northwestern Mexico and the Caribbean.
Paez Quintero is the nephew of drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero, and He was in charge of reconstructing his uncle’s criminal legacy, at the head of the so-called “Caborca Cartel”, With this they would attempt to regain control of criminal activities in the town of El Zoquete, in Caborca, Sonora.
“In compliance with the Extradition Treaty signed between Mexico and the United States of America, the (FGR) extradited a fugitive of Mexican nationality to the government of that country,” the agency said.
Mexican authorities said the drug trafficker is wanted by the Federal District Court for the District of Arizona for the crimes of criminal association and violations of public health.
“The fugitive was handed over at the Toluca International Airport, in the State of Mexico, to the U.S. agents designated to transfer him to that country,” the FGR said.
Páez Quintero, head of the Caborca Cartel or “La Plaza”, is accused of promoting the violence that occurs in the desert between Sonora and Arizona in the United Stateswhere antagonistic criminal groups have engaged in several battles for control of this region for the illegal trafficking of drugs, weapons, money and undocumented migrants.
But also They are accused of the violence that has occurred in the Mexican Caribbean, mainly in the tourist area of Cancun and Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo.where the Plaza Cartel has sought to expand its operations, mainly due to the profitable drug dealing business and control of the area through its seaports.
Other Buenos Aires “plazas” controlled by the Caborca cartel are Guaymas and Empalme in Sonora, which in recent years have seen an increase in intentional homicides and disappearances of men and women.
But also high-impact crimes, such as the attack in 2021 on the former police commander, Navy officer, Andrés Humberto Cano Ahuir, whom the cartel tried to kill but failed in their attempt.
During the clash, young feminist Marisol Cuadras died, another activist was injured and a reporter was hit by bullets.
Following the capture of Rafael Caro Quintero, the “La Chapiza” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel attacked “La Plaza” or “the Caborca Cartel” in an attempt to displace them from this region.
However, various intelligence reports have established that the efforts of the “minor” children of Joaquín Guzmán have been unsuccessful because the Quintero family and “the narco of narco-traffickers” have dominated all the desert routes between Sonora and Arizona for decades.
