Recently, an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll showed Vice President Kamala Harris would win against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. And it seems that Joe Biden is keeping an eye on this statistical exercise.
Without referring to the poll, US President Joe Biden on Thursday expressed his confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris, saying he would not have chosen her as his running mate in the 2020 election if he were not convinced she could serve as President “from the start.”
“I wouldn’t have chosen her if I didn’t think she was qualified to be president from the beginning. I’m not beating around the bush on that one. She is qualified to be president.”, the president said at a press conference on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington.
Harris seems like the only viable option if Biden is forced to withdraw from the race at this point in the campaign, a month before the Democratic Party convention, due to questions about his age (81 years old) and his ability to renew a four-year term in November.
Biden praised his vice president, who would take over if the president were to become incapacitated.
“She has handled issues of women’s bodily freedom and control over their bodies very well. Secondly, she has shown competence on almost any issue. She is a tough prosecutor. It’s one sentence: she is very good,” Biden insisted.
Polls after the June 27 presidential debate against Republican Donald Trump give Harris a bigger lead in a hypothetical November election showdown if Biden were to withdraw due to pressure from some members of his party.
The president’s poor performance in that face-to-face meeting raised doubts about his ability to beat Trump in November and remain in power for a second term, which would end at age 86.
Despite this, Biden’s speech has changed and he has refused to withdraw and today he again assured that he is the best positioned to beat Trump.
