What is sarcoma? It is a rare type of cancer that begins in the bones or soft tissues of the body and has in fact often been called “the forgotten cancer.”“. Dr. Carlos Cordero, a sarcoma surgeon, joined us to talk a little more about the subject, but also to tell us about the story of Andrea Najas, in her efforts to overcome this complex disease.

“Indeed, it is a little forgotten because it is extremely rare, Approximately 1% of all cancers that people suffer from are cancers that are known to occur in the connective tissues. Precisely, since it can be bone, muscle, the famous tumors that appear in fat and practically all these places that will perform a function of joining your body and this is also known as a tissue tumor.” Dr Carlos Cordero.

What is the cause that can be attributed?

Dr. Carlos Cordero: “There is no specific cause, there is no specific biology to blame, it is not very well known, There are several risk factors such as having received radiation, some mutations, some genetic malformations, having a predisposition to some syndromes, but there is nothing specific that can be put on it and blamed.Yes, certain associations and risk factors are known, as I said, they may be environmental or genetic, but something specific is not yet known.

Is it a similar treatment to other types of cancer?

Dr. Carlos Cordero: “Yes, quite similar, Here the cornerstone and the most important thing is to have a good surgery that is a resectable tumor.that a good surgery is performed, that is why it is always recommended that it be done in a specialized center, because there are many tumors, they could simulate or look like something that will not end up being bad and when it is time to remove it from the body it turns out that something was wrong, that is called a procedure.”
