Miguel Angel Gilmajority shareholder of Atletico Madridsaid on Wednesday that the Mexican soccer league, in which he is the owner of the saint Louis, has the potential to be a top five football competitions of the worldabove France’s Ligue 1.
“We have been working for months to organize and put Mexican soccer in the place I believe it deserves. In my opinion, and I always say this, Mexican soccer, in terms of the quantity and quality of the millions of fans in both Mexico and the United States, I have no doubt that It has to be yes or yes, as soon as things get a little bit tidy, the fifth league in the world, behind the Premier League, the Spanish League, the German League and the Italian League”, he explained at the Sports Summit Mexico 2024.
Since 2017, the group he leads at Atlético de Madrid acquired San Luis, which he promoted to the Mexican first division in 2019, the last Mexican club that was able to move up a category in a sporting way since the promotion was closed since the pandemic.
“Mexico has to regulate four aspects that are yet to be done, with the sale of 10 percent of the league to a fund. Today I was at the Owners’ Meeting and the first step was taken with that sale. With it, There is a consensus that will guarantee no multi-ownership, with four teams being put up for salethe centralized sale of broadcasting rights from the 2027-2028 season and allow financial control in which They will make finances transparent and create television packages to reach all audiences and not overlap parties with others,” he added.
Gil spoke at the summit, just a few minutes after appearing before the Board of Owners of Mexican soccer, where an agreement was reached to sell part of the competition to an international fund, something that will inject millions of dollars into the teams, if the requirements indicated by the owner of San Luis are met.
“I have no doubt that as soon as these steps are taken, the agreement with the fund will be closed in December and these milestones will be triggered, that have no point of return, and Mexican football will be among the top five in the world”, Gil said.
