Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) reported on Tuesday that The rains recorded in the month of June, the wettest since 1941, increased the water levels in the country’s dams, who were in a worrying situation.

“The recent rains have helped to increase the levels of some of Mexico’s main dams, which in various places has reduced the drought that has affected the country in recent years,” said Humberto Marengo Mogollón, deputy technical director general of Conagua.

The 148.7 millimeters of The rainfall recorded in Mexico in June 2024 represents 49% more precipitation than usual for this time in the country.

The Technical Subdirectorate General also reported that, as of July 1, the filling level of the 210 main dams in Mexico, which together have the capacity to store 92% of the water in the country’s reservoirs, was 38% full, which exceeds the 35% reported on June 18, containing a total volume of 48,017 million cubic meters (mm3).

As for the three storage dams of the Cutzamala System (El Bosque, Valle de Bravo and Villa Victoria), which supply 25% of the consumption of the Valley of Mexico, on average, they are located at 26.9% of their total fill level, reported the Valley of Mexico Water Basin Agency (OCAVM), which represents a one percentage point increase compared to June.

Waterholes appear on the coasts of the Riviera Maya

The heavy rains of recent weeks have also caused the appearance of numerous water holes on the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula.in southeastern Mexico, mainly in the resort of Playa del Carmen, Mexican Caribbean.

According to the municipal Civil Protection Department of Solidaridad, during several patrols along the coastal area of Playa del Carmen until Tuesday, a dozen springs have been located, most of which are small and do not represent any risk to the population.

The largest of these formations opened right next to the fiscal dock from which the boats that make the journey to Cozumel Island depart and in front of the Parque Fundadores, becoming one of the great tourist attractions of the moment.

According to the Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change of the Municipality of Solidaridad, Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, The springs that have been detected so far are outlets of fresh water that come from underground rivers that are characteristic of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The pressure on underground rivers caused by the heavy rains that have occurred in recent weeks, he explained, “caused these cracks to open between the rocks through which the water comes out, but it is expected that they will close again when the rainy season ends.”
