The center of storm 'Chris' makes landfall on the coast of Veracruz, southern Mexico

The center of the tropical storm ‘Chris’ made landfall on Sunday night (06/30/2024)in the town of Lechuguillas, a town in the southern Mexican state of Veracruz, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) detailed in its latest report that tropical storm ‘Chris’ impacted the municipality of Vega de Alatorre at 10:50 p.m. (04:50 GMT).

The third hydrometeorological phenomenon of the 2024 season It had maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h)gusts of 85 km/h and movement towards the west at 20 km/h.

The Mexican Meteorological Service warned in its note of extraordinary rains in Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz; in addition to torrential rains in Oaxaca and Tamaulipas; and intense in Campeche, Chiapas, Nuevo León and Tabasco.

It also predicted very heavy rains in states in the center of the country and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Likewise, the SMN predicted wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h, possible formation of waterspouts and waves between two and four meters high on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Tabasco.

“The aforementioned rainfall is expected to be accompanied by electrical shocks. and possible hail, which could cause landslides, increased levels of rivers and streams, as well as overflows and flooding in areas of the aforementioned states,” he warned.

The Mexican authorities urged the population, tourists and maritime navigation to heed official warnings, follow Civil Protection recommendations and take extreme precautions against rain, wind and high waves.

“The SMN, of Conagua, in coordination with the National Hurricane Center in Miami, in the United States of America, establishes prevention zone for effects of tropical storm from Cabo Rojo to the Port of Veracruz, Veracruz”, he concluded.

Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ is the third of 21 tropical cyclones expected in the Atlantic Ocean alone for the 2024 season and occurs alongside Hurricane Beryl and after Alberto, which caused damage due to rain and flooding in northern Mexico.
