The Mexican team committed its options to transcend the 2024 Copa América. El Tri lost 1-0 with Venezuela, a painful defeat that leaves them in a situation complicated before the last game of group B.

On paper there was no defeat against the Venezuelan team. The forecasts anticipated at least a draw against the South American team. However, José Salomón Rondón and Rafa Romo had other plans at SoFi Stadium.

Mexico’s defeat and Ecuador’s victory over Jamaica means that Group B has a cinematic ending. On the last day, Venezuela, already qualified, will play Jamaica, already eliminated. The main course will be between Ecuador and Mexico.

On Sunday, June 30, Ecuador and Mexico will play for qualification at the University of Phoenix Stadium. However, El Tri is at a disadvantage in this last match.

Mexico and Ecuador are equal on points. Both teams have a victory in Group B. However, La Tri is above Mexico due to goal difference (Ecuador is +1).

Defeat, obviously, is a result that would leave Jaime Lozano’s team out. The tie would also be a result that ends Mexican participation in the Copa América 2024 because Ecuador would be on top thanks to its goal differential.

Victory is the only result that El Tri should bet on in the last day. A Mexican victory would give them direct qualification to the quarterfinals.

El Tri would also have a chance of finishing first in the group, but to do so, Venezuela must lose to Jamaica and Mexico must surpass La Vinotinto in goal differential. So far Mexico has 0 in that line, while Venezuela has +2. This is a factor to take into account because The second in this group has all the tickets to face Argentina in the next round.
