At least two people dead and eight injured is the preliminary toll of a shooting in a store at a gas station in Arkansas.
State Police reported what happened at the Mad Butcher grocery store in the city of Fordyce.
Among the injured is a police officer, but his life is not in danger, according to authorities.
The shooter was seriously injured by police officers who responded to the emergency, according to an official report.
The events occurred around 11:30 local time (three hours before Eastern time).
“A total of nine civilians were wounded by gunshots, two fatally. A police officer was also shot, but he does not have life-threatening injuries,” the state police said in a statement. “The shooter is critically injured after being shot by authorities; he has been taken into custody.”
Local media report intense police mobilization in the city of Fordyce, about 65 miles from Little Rock.
Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she was informed by State Police of the shooting and has had updates.
“I thank law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save lives,” he said. “My prayers are with the victims and everyone affected by this horrible incident.”
The attack occurs a week after the Supreme Court endorsed the so-called ‘bump stocks’, which are adapters to convert a semi-automatic rifle into a submachine gun type.
