Lead-contaminated applesauce bags removed from market

This Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of applesauce bags from the market and cinnamon which are contaminated with large amounts of lead and which according to the store were for several weeks on the shelves of the Dollar Tree retail chain.

According to the agency, hundreds of cases of lead poisoning have been reported throughout the country due to the ingestion of this product. some of these products belonged to the WanaBana brand.

And although the company began withdrawing this product at the end of last year, the retail chain continued to sell them in its different locations. In a warning letter to Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling, the agency said: “Despite numerous attempts by the FDA to draw their attention to this serious problem, they did not comply with the measure.”

However, the company assured that “in October 2023, Dollar Tree took immediate action and began executing a recall on the WanaBana Cinnamon Apple Fruit Puree bag. when you were notified of the problem with the product. “We continue to cooperate with the FDA on this matter,” he said in a statement.

According to the FDA on December 19, 2023, the recall remained unimplemented and was being very ineffective on the part of the retailer, and it was only on March 22 of this year that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began to receive reports of lead contamination, To date, 519 cases have been recorded in at least 44 states.
