The event occurred around 5 p.m. local time at a park with aquatic facilities in Rochester Hills, north of Detroit, when a man exited a vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd with a 9mm caliber short weapon.

In the park there were minors and at least one of the injured is an 8-year-old boyaccording to police authorities, who added that at least 28 shots were fired and three magazines have been recovered.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference Saturday night that about 10 people were initially believed to have suffered gunshot wounds in the shooting, but the number was lowered after consulting with local hospitals. .

The mother and four-year-old brother of the child who was left in critical condition were also shot. The younger brother was wounded in the leg and was in stable condition, while the mother was in critical condition after being wounded in the abdomen and leg.

We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills. That is still an active crime scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area. We have numerous wounded victims. More to follow.

The police followed the alleged perpetrator to a house where he barricaded himself. Subsequently the man committed suicideaccording to Oakland County Sheriff’s sources.

“It appears that the individual stopped, got out of the vehicle, approached the water area, opened fire, reloaded, opened fire again, reloaded and left,” Bouchard said.

“Everything indicates that it has been indiscriminate. There is no apparent connection with the injured,” Bouchard said at a press conference.

He said officers were on the splash pad two minutes after receiving the call at 5:11 p.m.

The mayor of Rochester Hills, Bryan Barnett, said that he has received calls about the shooting and the victims from the White House, the state governor, Gretchen Whitmer, and representatives of Congress.

“It is a horrible scene that is repeated too many times throughout our country,” Barnett lamented.

Whitmer said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that she was heartbroken to learn of the shooting and was in contact with local officials.
