12-year-old boy died after falling into a Utah river while on vacation with his family

Authorities reported that A 12-year-old boy died in Utah after falling into a river and being swept miles downstream on Saturday.

The boy, who was from Arizona, was vacationing with his family near Bridal Veil Falls when he fell into the swollen Provo River around 1:45 p.m., the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.

Multiple agencies responded to search for the boy, who was seen at several points along the river, FOX13 Salt Lake City reported.

A rescuer attempted to jump into the river to rescue the boy after seeing him, according to the station, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Authorities said the fast-moving water was moving the boy at between 10 and 12 mph, KUTV reported.

The sheriff’s office indicated that The boy was pulled from the river near Orem, 4 miles downstream from where he fell.

After it was reported that the boy was finally rescued, the sheriff’s office posted an update on social media announcing that the minor had died at a hospital.

The boy’s identity has not yet been revealed.

Utah authorities have warned about the high and fast flow of the Provo River and have advised visitors to stay away from the water’s edge.

“The Provo River is currently flowing at a very fast pace throughout the county. It is EXTREMELY dangerous to recreate anywhere nearby. PLEASE STAY AWAY. Consider alternative locations until flow returns to normal. If visiting parks or trails along the Provo River, please stay at least 40 feet away from the banks of the river,” the Provo Police Department said in a social media post.

On Friday, the Bureau of Reclamation declared an “Emergency Level 1” alert for high flows out of Deer Creek Dam and warned of possible minor flooding along the Provo River in the coming days.
