Tragic accident in Orange County: 14-year-old girl dies after being run over

A Hispanic man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and killing a 14-year-old teenager by running over him this Saturday night in Orange County.

Joseph Alcázar, 30, was arrested by police after hitting the young woman on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach while he was allegedly drunk behind the wheel, authorities said.

Police officers responded to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian at approximately 6:47 p.m., incident that occurred near the intersection of Balboa Boulevard and Palm Streetone block from Balboa Fun Zone.

The victim He died at the place where the accident occurred and authorities did not immediately provide his identity.

Joseph Alcazar, 30, of Fontana, remained in place. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of traffic death homicide and cruelty to a child.

The Newport Beach Police Department believes that alcohol may have been a factor for this fatal incident to occur.

Balboa Boulevard was closed to vehicular traffic in the area from Washington Street to East Bay Avenue while the accident investigation was underway.

Authorities did not provide further details related to this fatal hit-and-run case.
