President Joe Biden delivered the commencement address Saturday at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, leaning on issues related to the importance of protecting democracy.
Biden called graduating class “guardians of American democracy” and emphasized that maintaining freedom required “constant vigilance,” speaking to an open-air stadium filled with cadets and their families and friends.
“Nothing is guaranteed about our democracy in the United States,” Biden warned.
While Biden never mentioned former President Donald Trump by name, his emphasis on duty, democracy and protecting the Constitution had clear political undertones and underscored a central message of his re-election bid.
Biden told the cadet class of 2024 that They would face challenges in their careers, especially at a time when more and more were being asked of service members.
But he implored them to fulfill the oaths they took as guiding principles throughout their lives, including his commitment to serve not a political party or a president, but to defend the Constitution and the United States against all its enemies, internal and external.
“They must keep us free right now, like never before,” Biden said.
“America is stronger when we lead not only by the example of our power, but also by the power of our example. Congratulations to the West Point Class of 2024. “They make our entire nation proud,” Biden said.
The president referred to the number of global challenges that the country currently faces, from the war in Ukraine to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reiterated his commitment not to send US troops to Ukraine, but he emphasized that the United States would continue to support its ally in its fight against Russia. “We will not walk away,” Biden said.
The president highlighted the “critical role” of US support for its allies around the world, including Israel and in the Indo-Pacific.
In fact, he specified the importance they had in neutralizing the Iranian attacks against Israel in April and their support for Indo-Pacific allies in the face of China’s growing militarism in the region.
“Thanks to the United States Armed Forces, we are doing what only the United States can do as an indispensable nation, the only superpower in the world,” he stated.
